If you’re new to indoor climbing, welcome aboard! It’s one of the most exciting, social, and satisfying ways to get active. Whether you’re looking to try something new, challenge yourself, or just have a laugh with friends, indoor climbing delivers on all fronts. But before you hit the walls, you’re probably wondering: what do I actually need to get started?
Don’t worry, it’s simpler than you might think. Here’s a quick guide to the essentials.
1. Climbing Shoes
First things first: climbing shoes. Unlike your standard trainers, climbing shoes are snug, grippy, and purpose-built to help you balance and stick to the holds. For beginners, comfort is key. There’s no need to cram your toes into the tightest pair you can find.
At The Climbing Hangar, we try to look after newer climbers: You don’t need to buy or even bring shoes. We offer free climbing shoe rental for everybody. When you’re ready to invest, we also stock a variety of climbing shoes from the best brands to suit all styles and budgets.
2. Chalk
There’s no two ways around it: Indoor climbing can make your hands sweaty. That’s where chalk comes in. It keeps your hands dry and helps you grip the holds better.
You’ll often see climbers dusting their hands in chalk or using chalk bags clipped to their waists. But again, no stress for first-timers: we will provide some free chalk on your first visit, so you can focus on enjoying your climb without worrying about slippery hands.
If you decide to stick with climbing, having your own chalk bag is a nice touch. We’ve got a solid range of chalk and bags from trusted brands in case you’re ready to kit yourself out.
3. Clothes You Can Move In
No need for fancy gear here. Loose or stretchy clothes are ideal. We’re talking joggers, leggings, or shorts. You’ll want something that lets you move freely but isn’t too baggy (baggy stuff can get in the way or snag on holds). A simple t-shirt or tank top works perfectly. But remember that unlike some climbing gyms, The Hangar operates a strict tops on policy. Sorry fellas.
4. A Good Attitude
Okay, this isn’t gear, but it’s worth mentioning. Climbing is as much about mindset as it is about movement. Be prepared to try, fall, laugh, and try again. You don’t need to be strong or fearless to get started. Just open-minded and ready to have fun.
At The Climbing Hangar, we’ll make sure you feel confident and prepared before you get stuck in. Our team offers a comprehensive introduction to climbing on your first visit, at no extra cost. We’ll show you the ropes (figuratively, of course since bouldering doesn’t use ropes) and answer any questions so you can make the most of your session.
Ready to Get Started?
With climbing shoes on your feet, chalk on your hands, and a comfy outfit, you’re all set. Indoor bouldering is one of the most accessible and rewarding sports you can try, whether you’re climbing solo, bringing friends, or looking to meet like-minded people.
So, what are you waiting for? Head to The Climbing Hangar for your first climb. We’ll take care of the gear, the chalk, and the know-how. All you need to bring is yourself.
